Caledon State Park is accepting applications for the Interpretive Assistant position.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a self-motivated, organized, and customer service-oriented individual to work with a wide variety of guests as part of the park's Visitor Experience team. This position will work primarily in the Visitor Center and conduct a few interpretive programs each month.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide optimal customer service with a friendly, professional, and courteous attitude.
- Offer detailed information to park guests about park services and rules, directions to points of interest, trail information, interpretive programs, and the surrounding local area.
- Collect applicable parking fees; register overnight guests; operate a cash register; complete daily cash management reports while adhering to state cash management policies.
- Develop and deliver public programs and assist with special events throughout the park as needed.
- Maintain accurate records for program attendance, visitor center attendance, and camper check-in/check-out.
- Ensure the visitor center, gift shop, and public restrooms remain clean, organized, and well-stocked.
- Maintain all interpretive supplies to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Availability to work various shifts to include weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to develop, organize, and facilitate natural, cultural, and historical programs and events for all ages.
- Proficient in public speaking.
- Interpersonal skills to provide excellent customer service to the public.
- Comfortable working independently and on a team.
- Ability to memorize and recall information, perform basic math skills, and operate a computer and cash register.
Additional Considerations
- Experience in biology, history, parks and recreation, elementary education, and/or wildlife studies.
- Experience with cash handling and operating a cash register in a customer service, office, and/or retail setting.
- Experience in natural and/or historical interpretation to include knowledge of Virginia history; understanding of ecology and familiarity with the area's flora and fauna.
Special Requirements
Must be at least 18 years old.
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
