James River State Park is accepting applications for a Volunteer Coordinator position.
Job Summary:
The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for communicating with new and existing volunteers, with an emphasis on customer service and management; accurately maintaining forms, online databases, and updating volunteer accounts; and tracking volunteer benefits. This position works directly with volunteers in both office and outdoor settings, oversees camp hosts, and directly supervises volunteer work throughout the park.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively recruiting, onboarding, and training new volunteers.
- Working closely with the Chief Ranger to schedule, coordinate, and complete volunteer service projects both in the office and out in the park.
- Training, Recruiting, and assisting camp hosts with various duties through the park
- Supervising volunteer work directly in the field, including trail work, habitat restoration, and other park improvement projects.
- Coordinating volunteer groups such as Alternative Spring Break, corporate volunteer teams, and scout projects.
- Supporting the park’s group volunteer partners, including Friends of James River State Park, Virginia Master Naturalists, and other community organizations.
- Assisting volunteers with light construction, carpentry, grounds keeping, trail building, and cleaning tasks necessary to operate State Park facilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience developing and working with special events.
- Must have the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather, stand for long periods, traverse uneven ground, and carry, pull, and/or lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Must be able to work weekends as assigned. While scheduling is operations-dependent, this position requires frequent weekend work.
- Able to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license.
Additional Considerations:
- Prior experience working with volunteers to complete tasks.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience with volunteers, interns, or seasonal staff.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
We provide on-the-job training. Must wear uniform consistent with park standards. Shirt and hat will be provided. Employees may be required to perform other park-related duties during emergencies or on a non-recurrent basis.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to the Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
