Wilderness Road State Park is accepting applications for an Interpretive Ranger position.
Job Summary:
Will provide meaningful educational opportunities and experiences for park guests by interpreting the significance of Wilderness Road State Park's historical and cultural resources. Must possess a working knowledge of Virginia’s frontier culture (1750 - 1785) and be responsible for applying that knowledge in the design and implementation of daily programming, skills demonstrations, special events, and educational outreach.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Chief Ranger of Visitor Experience with volunteer coordination and program planning. Duties include communicating with and managing volunteers and volunteer programming, both virtually and on-site.
- Manage the volunteer database (New and Existing Volunteers).
- Create and implement new and diverse programming.
- Creating new and engaging programming for outreach facilities.
- Utilizing Microsoft and Canva Software for programming guides.
- Traveling to and attending programming needs at off-site and community partner locations.
Other duties include:
- Maintaining historical structures and interpretive resources, ensuring they are in good working order, 18th century gardening, applying a working knowledge of 18th century culture to current programming.
- Willingness to research and develop new programming and skill sets.
- Working with local organizations to diversify programming, attending professional development workshops and seminars,
- Assist park visitors using good customer service techniques, provide children’s educational programming, keep accurate records, and assist with other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess strong personal communication skills and be able to speak to large audiences in a clear and precise manner
- Provide third-person historical interpretive programs, 18th century skills demonstrations, and educational programming related to colonial Virginia, the Revolutionary War, and Martin’s Station while dressed in period-correct clothing within a living history environment.
- Must be able to plan, organize, and conduct tours and programs to a diverse audience.
- Must be able to successfully plan 18th-century-based programs.
- Must be able to use Microsoft, Canva, Excel, and other DCR/Parks web-based programs.
- Must successfully work with 18th century volunteers.
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Valid Driver's License required.
- Must attend mandatory paid training.
- Must be able to work well with diverse staff and park guests.
- Must be willing to work evening shifts, weekends, and holidays. The position requires working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions while wearing park provided 18th Century clothing.
Additional Considerations:
- Significant experience working in an 18th-century historic setting.
- Knowledge of first/third person interpretation, as well as a general knowledge of 18th-century culture, is preferred.
Special Instructions:
Experience is not required but is preferred. Employees may be required to perform other park-related duties during emergencies or on a non-recurrent basis.
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for Commonwealth of Virginia benefits (health care, paid leave, etc.) and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
