Virginia's once extensive longleaf pine dominated habitats were almost completely extirpated and only a handful of "relict" trees survived. A few of these remain at the Antioch Pines NAP where they are largely hidden from view in a location known to only a few hardy longleaf specialists and afficiandos. This guided walk, led by DNH staff, one of which has worked in old growth longleaf in FL, TX, and NC, will lead discussion of longleaf's former significance and decline, plus its hopeful future thanks to restoration projects initiated by DNH and other conservation partners. After finding the relicts, there will be an optional extra chance to explore well-managed longleaf and see one of the unusual rare plants associated with longleaf, pixie moss (Pyxidanthera barbulata).
