Throughout the years, Amelia County has produced countless remarkable individuals who have left an enduring mark on regional and national history. Athletes, politicians, lawyers, musicians, clergymen, and veterans alike have all emerged from the rolling landscapes of Virginia’s Central Piedmont.

Among the most inspirational—yet lesser-known—figures is Dr. Robert Russa Moton, born on the Hillsman Farm in Amelia County in the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War. Moton spent his early childhood along the peaceful banks of Sailor’s Creek, a place that only years before had witnessed one of the war’s final and most devastating battles. It was here that he first learned to read and write, nurturing a curiosity and imagination that would shape his extraordinary future.

Join us for a discussion and guided tour as we explore Dr. Moton’s early life in Amelia County and trace his journey into adulthood, where he emerged as a pioneering leader in education and civil rights. Sailor’s Creek Historian Joshua Lindamood will lead the program, connecting Moton’s humble beginnings to other notable historical figures and events of the era. New research and rare photographs will be presented during this program.

The program will begin with a fireside gathering in the yard beside the historic Hillsman House. From there, participants will be guided through the home before continuing on a short hike to a recently identified site of historical significance near the Wheaton Trail. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair for the fireside discussion, along with comfortable walking shoes and water for the hike.

Please note that the Hillsman House requires navigating five to six steps, all equipped with hand railings, and the total walking distance for the program will be approximately one-quarter mile. This program is free and open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, portions of the program may be modified or relocated as necessary. For questions or additional information, please contact Joshua Lindamood at Joshua.Lindamood@dcr.virginia.gov.
