Geminids Meteor Shower Watch Party

Visit James River for a chance to view one of the richest meteor showers of the year!

Did you know that James River State Park is a member of the International Dark Sky Association (IDA)? The darker the skies, the more of these meteors you can see! The Geminids meteor shower is active December 17 - December 26 and can produce up to 120-150 meteors an hour at its peak.

Volunteer astronomers will bring their telescopes and share their knowledge about what you are seeing. Learn more about the importance of dark skies while we explore our vast and endless universe with our telescopes. Who knows what we will find? If you have a telescope or binoculars, bring them with you, and we will give you some pointers. If it’s cloudy, we will still offer a presentation. Please bring some comfortable chairs.

Please meet at the IDA Viewing Area (follow signs for the Amphitheater and Shelters 3/4). All materials provided. Suitable for all ages. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather and bring a water bottle with you. Parks are for everyone, please let us know if you need special accommodation.
