Vibrant shades of red and gold pop up on mountainsides and in lake reflections at Hungry Mother State Park. As one of the original six Virginia State Parks, guests can enjoy staying in a historic cabin built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In addition to a variety of cabins, a lodge, yurts and campgrounds are available. Plan a biking excursion at New River Trail State Park, approximately 1 hour away, and soak up the fall scenery along this 57-mile linear park that follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way and parallels the historic New River.

Piedmont

Only a few minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, the fall foliage viewing at Fairy Stone State Park is spectacular. Take a stroll around the 168-acre lake for stunning views or hike, cycle or horseback ride on the park’s Little Mountain Falls Trail System. Historic CCC cabins are also available at this park, the largest of the six original parks, along with a lodge, a bunkhouse, yurts and campgrounds. Please note: The main campground is undergoing renovations until February 28, 2026. While the equestrian campground is not directly impacted, guests will not be able to use the bathhouse and dump station at the main campground.

A little more than an hour’s drive will take you to Smith Mountain Lake State Park’s picturesque fall foliage and water recreation on the second-largest freshwater lake in the state.

Raymond R. “Andy” Guest, Jr. Shenandoah River State Park boasts 5.2 miles of shoreline along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. In addition to the meandering river frontage, the park offers scenic views of Massanutten Mountain to the west and Shenandoah National Park to the east. Culler’s Overlook provides a gorgeous panoramic perspective for fall foliage seekers and has been voted the best scenic overlook in Virginia. Lodging options include cabins, a lodge, camping cabins, yurts and campgrounds.

Plan a drive to Sky Meadows State Park, approximately 45 minutes away, for colorful views of a historic farm’s woodlands and rolling pastures. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are favorite activities in this peaceful park with Appalachian Trail access.

Nestled in the heart of the Cumberland State Forest in central Virginia, Bear Creek Lake State Park is the perfect getaway for outdoor enthusiasts and leaf peepers. Cabins, a lodge, a bunkhouse and a campground offer overnight accommodations as guests take in the fall sights while enjoying the park’s hiking trails, the 15.7-mile Cumberland Multi-use Trail, the 40-acre lake’s paddling and fishing opportunities or the 10-lane archery range.

Approximately 40 minutes away, High Bridge Trail State Park provides 32 miles of rails-to-trails with a bird’s eye view of the Appomattox River and sweeping fall colors from the High Bridge.

Potomac

To view the shades of fall along the Potomac River, Westmoreland State Park on the North Neck is a perfect getaway spot. One of the original six Virginia State Parks and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, guests will find historic CCC-built log cabins, plus camping cabins and a campground. Hunt for ancient shark teeth along the Potomac while marveling at the cliffs awash with color.

Drive approximately 45 minutes to view Caledon State Park’s Potomac-side forests displaying spectacular fall foliage. Guests can enjoy bird watching from wide, rolling trails suitable for all abilities, surrounded by towering old-growth canopies.

Nothing says harvest time quite like autumn on one of the oldest continually farmed plantations in the country. A working farm since 1619, Chippokes State Park lies just across the James River from historic Jamestown and offers outdoor recreation and a glimpse of life in a bygone era. Tour its antebellum mansion and outbuildings and view antique equipment at the Farm and Forestry Museum. Guests can get a feel for that era by staying overnight in a colonial-style farmhouse. Yurts and a campground are also available.

Less than an hour away, York River State Park also shows off its fall colors along some of the best mountain biking trail systems in the state. Visitors can enjoy fall foliage views on a bike, foot or by paddling the Taskinas Creek.
